Umamicue

Day 1: 5-Course East Meets West Tasting Series

Opened this past April in Logan Square, this one-of-a-kind eatery vaulted onto a brace of “Best Of” Lists, including Chicago Magazine’s “10 Hottest in Chicago Right Now,” Infatuation’s “Best BBQ in Chicago,” and Eater’s “Essential Chicago Barbecue Restaurants.” In 2014, Chef/Owner Charles Wong visited Austin’s fabled Franklin BBQ and resolved to bring that brand of Texas-style barbecue back to the Windy City. In 2016, he started Umamicue, where his favorite taste, umami, met his favorite meat. Now ensconced in Spilt Milk, the popular dive bar on the corner of Fullerton and California, Umamicue features dishes like smoked brisket and pork belly banh mi, smoked crab rangoon, and other delights. “Umamicue fuses Vietnamese and barbecue with verve,” raves Chicago Tribune. “Breathtaking!” We are primed to have our breath taken away as we dig into Chef Wong’s ingenious inventions, which prove to the world that multiculturalism really is something worth celebrating!
