Day 1: 5-Course Ode to the African Diaspora Tasting Series
Opened in 2023 in downtown Heritage Square, this immersive experience that celebrates Africa and the African diaspora’s diverse and delicious flavors has been featured on three “Best Of” 2026 Lists: Eater’s “38 Essentials,” Infatuation’s “Best Restaurants in Phoenix,” and Arizona Republic’s “100 Essential Restaurants.” At Latha, which means “flavor” in Swahili, Evelia Davis has dedicated herself to an important mission. The founder and CEO of The Diaspora Collective, a cultural movement dedicated to celebrating the richness of Africa, she has created an atmosphere that honors the interconnected journey of the foodways and culture of Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and the Southern US. Here, diners can delight in such dishes as pimento cheese with coconut bread, pineapple piri-piri chicken, adobo rubbed pork, oxtail barbacoa, shrimp aguachile, and, for dessert, chocolate torte with avocado mousse and Southern pound cake with caramelized passion fruit, warm mango, and white chocolate. “Joyous…deliciously innovative,” raves Phoenix Mag, so, naturally, we are more than excited to visit here and to chat with the team. Through Latha Restaurant & Bar, Soko, and Griot Foods, she creates spaces where people celebrate culture, discover their roots, connect through shared stories, and experience the flavors, creativity, and innovation of Africa and the diaspora.
