Ilna
Day 1: 5-Course Revisiting Levantine Roots Tasting Series
Opened in November of last year as a Sunday-night residency at Buddy in the Mission, Ilna has quickly earned citywide buzz, with spots on Resy’s Hit List, Eater SF’s “Best Dishes” List, and San Francisco Standard “Best Pop-Ups”. Chef/Owner Maz Naba, who is half Lebanese, channels a deep love for his culture, as well as a long line of top-of-the-line experience (he’s honed his craft everywhere from Rich Table, to Osito, to Mr. Jiu’s, to Nightbird, to The Matheson) into the project. The menu is the same, refracting rich Lebanese tradition through fresh California produce. Here diners find delights like kishk labne with smoked trout, cured ikura, and buttermilk bulgur on squid-ink pita; yogurt dumplings filled with dry-aged beef and dusted with za’atar pepper crunch; kampachi crudo with rose vinegar, persimmon, and sumac furikake; and a showstopping stuffed squash packed with Dungeness crab fried rice, pepita–date crisp, and nasturtium aioli. Plus a playful “Habibi Tiramisu” scented with cardamom and orange blossom for dessert. With its convivial, “Levant-meets-California” spirit, as well as Chef Naba’s front-of-house polish, Ilna feels like a communal table writ large. “For us,” as the name promises, and we do indeed hope you can join us!
