El Chingon
Day 2: 5-Course Revisiting Pueblan Roots Tasting Series
Opened a year and a half ago, this East Passyunk Mexican eatery has appeared on some of the best of the “Best Of” Lists, including Eater’s “Most Essential Mexican in Philly,” Infatuation’s “Best in South Philly,” and—drumroll, please—New York Times’ “50 Most Exciting Restaurants in the US” El Chingon means “a dude who can get the job done,” and Chef/Owner Juan Carlos Aparicio is that guy. After emigrating to the U.S. from Mexico, he got his first job at a Greek bakery in New York City and eventually became head baker for Stephen Starr at Parc, turning out baguettes that put that restaurant on the map. At El Chingon, his cemitas—Pueblan-style sandwiches—are the draw. They come in a dazzling range of beef, chicken, pork, and vegan options. The tacos are amazing too, as are desserts like arroz con tres leches and guava cheesecake. “This is the restaurant Juan Carlos Aparicio has been waiting his whole life to open,” raves Philadelphia Magazine. “And we’re so lucky it’s finally here.” And we’re so lucky we’re going. See you there!
