About
Opened in March of 2024, this Michelin Guide Recommended eatery in Downtown’s historic Littlefield Building brings truly elevated Mexican cuisine to a city that has no shortage of Mexican restaurants. Chef Mikel Alonso Garcia comes to Austin as the acclaimed chef and proprietor of Biko, a Michelin-Starred restaurant in Mexico City. He is also the head of the Culinary Institute of Southwest University in El Paso. Mexta, which is a mash-up of “Mex” and “ATX,” offers familiar favorites, like guacamole and ceviche, but also lesser-seen regional favorites, like pork belly with Oaxacan peanut sauce and tikin xic salmon with xnipec salsa. And it’s all served up under a stunning wooden ceiling inspired by a full moon ceremony in Tamaulipas. “A stylish spot” is how the Michelin Guide describes Mexta, “offering refined takes on classic Mexican preparations…Sauces especially impress.”
