This Peruvian eatery in Cambridge’s Huron Village neighborhood opened last year and has been showered with accolades ever since, appearing on such Lists as Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants in America in 2022” and Boston Magazine's “Best New Restaurant Winner of 2022.” It was also a Semi-Finalist for James Beard's coveted “Best New Restaurant” Award. Chef JuanMa Calderón and his partner Maria Rondeau teamed up initially to open Celeste in Somerville (which Esquire promptly named Best New Restaurant of 2018) and then opened Esmeralda in their country home in Andover, Vermont (another Esquire Best New Restaurant, this time of 2021). With La Royal - just steps away from their city home - they are outdoing themselves now though. Maria, a trained architect, designed the stunning modern space in which her husband (also an independent video producer and director) has free rein to recreate his mother’s rustic home cooking that he grew up with in Lima. Diners enjoy superb dishes like scallop-and-blue-cod ceviche, pastel de choclo de carne, a round of baked polenta stuffed with ground sirloin, patarashca, a grilled branzino in plantain leaves, and three extraordinary potato terrines.
