About
Opened a year ago this June in Union Market, this fascinating, Michelin-Recommended eatery that pays tribute to the Silk Road hopped right onto Washington Post’s 2025 Lists of “10 Best in NoMa” and “40 Best In & Around DC” as well as this year’s “38 Essentials” List from Eater. The creation of Chef Sanjay Mandhaiya, the creative force behind 14th Street’s popular Pappe, Kaaravaan melds culinary influences from Persian, Portuguese, Indian, and Turkish cuisines to deliver a menu that diners are joyfully eating up. Here, one can find dishes like khachapuri, a classic Georgian dish comprising a bread boat filled with cheese and a freshly cracked egg. Classic chickpea falafel gets a touch of ginger for a new taste experience. What about wild mushroom biryani or fettucine a la goshtab, the classic Kashmiri lamb curry? Yummy desserts too, like mango-chai cheesecake and yuzu-lime tart. And it’s all served up by hosting Chef Robert Fitz amid an exotic, Orient Express ambiance that is meant to connote a journey. “Stunning,” raves Eater, while Washington Post heralds Karravaan as “mouthwatering.”
