Opened in 2021 in the Milwaukee Junction neighborhood, Freya has appeared on such coveted Best Of Lists as New York Times’ “America’s 50 Most Exciting Restaurants” (2022) and Eater’s “38 Essential Detroit Restaurants” (2025). What’s more, Chef/Owner Doug Hewitt was a 2023 James Beard “Outstanding Restaurateur” Semi-Finalist and a 2024 James Beard “Best Chef: Great Lakes” Semi-Finalist. His menu explains why, with such spectacular dishes as venison with truffle pavé, shiitakes, huckleberries, and pistachios, ravioli with sunchokes, rhubarb, ramps, black garlic, and oyster mushrooms, walleye with olives and arugula pesto, and Berkshire pork chop with creamed kale, sorghum popcorn, peaches, and shiitakes. Luscious desserts too like chocolate kirsch baba and berry madeleine cake. “Creative, wild, and audacious but down-to-earth…each dish is perfectly seasoned,” said Hour Detroit, when they named Freya its 2024 “Restaurant of the Year.”
