About
Opened this past June, this Michelin-Recommended eatery overlooking Seward Park on the Lower East Side celebrates the vibrant cuisine of Mexico City and has already been cited in NY Times as one of the city’s most notable Mexican restaurants. Chef Gaz Herbert, a native of Cuernavaca, earned a Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu London and trained at the Michelin-Starred River Café before co-founding the 2-Michelin-Starred Ikoyi. In 2021, he moved to New York City where he opened Jupiter in Rockefeller Center. Most recently, he was Culinary Director at Todos Santos Boutique Hotel in Baja California. At Comal, whose name derives from the flat round griddle used widely in Mexican cooking, he is turning out dishes like crab tostada with smoked aubergine, beef tartare with chapulins and huitlacoche, grilled little gem lettuce with spanish mackeral and mole rosa, and much, much more. It’s all served up in a stylish setting with art from Mexican artists adorning the walls.
