Onggi
Day 2: 5-Course Tribute to Korean Tradition Tasting Series
Opened this April, this superb Korean eatery just a stone’s throw from Dupont Circle jumped right onto Eater’s List of “Most Exciting DC Openings” and Resy’s List of “Top Restaurants in DC Right Now.” At Onggi, which is named for the traditional earthenware vessels in which the ancient Korean art of fermentation takes place, diners discover brilliant versions of well-known dishes like bibimbap, but also such lesser-known fare as galbijjim (braised short rib stew), japchae (sweet potato glass noodles with vegetables), dak-galbi (spicy seared chicken with rice cakes), and bada galibi (Gochujang-seared scallops with kabocha puree and kimchi). “A modern oasis serving modern hansik, or Korean traditional food,” says Washingtonian, while Eater extols “the serene, spa-like setting.” Have we mentioned the pots of soothing flower tea? It all sounds like exactly the getaway we’re looking for, and we’ll hope to see you there!
