Gertie

DAY 1: 6-Course Ode to Old New York Dinner Event

In February 2019, in Williamsburg, this temple to “New Yawk City” dining opened, designed to reproduce the madeleines of the Gotham Everyperson, with such nostalgia-heavy dishes as Reuben patties, smoked fish salad, homemade bialys, and egg creams. When night falls, the menu changes to items like shrimp rolls, Waldorf salad, pot pie, and the spectacular Poppy’s Duck, a rotisserie bird served with “everything” rice, scallion pancakes, and duck sauce. Gertie, named after owner Nate Adler’s real-life grandmother, is perhaps best described as a kind of ecstatic vision of dinner at Grandma’s—if Grandma didn’t burn the pot roast. Chef Mike Cain, late of Celestine and The Baccarat Hotel, never burns anything and clearly is having a field day here with his retro creations. And did we mention that the décor is an absolute hoot? We will be taking over Gertie for this event, and Chef Cain will be on hand to answer your questions and discuss how he reimagines and revitalizes old favorites.
