Hiraya

Day 1: 5-Course Elevated Filipino Tasting Event

Opened this past September on the H Street Corridor, this Filipino eatery whose name in Tagalog means “the fruit of one’s hopes, dreams, and aspirations” has been gathering accolades by the armful, including spots on Washingtonian’s “10 Most Exciting Openings” List, Bon Appetit’s “Most Anticipated Openings of 2023” List, and Robb Report’s “11 Most Anticipated Openings in America” List of 2023. Small surprise, as the opening chef, Paolo Dungca, was named a “Rising Star” Chef by StarChefs in 2022. At Hiraya, diners discover exciting flavor combinations in dishes like beet adobo with black garlic and bay leaf, pork chop “Dinuguan” with burnt coconut and shishito peppers, jumbo prawns in a coconut kale stew, cassava cake, and much more. “The café’s food platters will have you glued to your wicker basket seat,” raves Infatuation. Naturally, we are primed to visit and to learn more from hosting Chef Julie Cortes about a world cuisine whose refinements are not always seen.
